Walkers & Cyclists Welcome: The East of England

Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk

Explore East Anglia and you'll discover a diverse mixture of cities, towns and villages, beautiful countryside and idyllic seaside.

The area is made up of the six counties of Norfolk, Suffolk, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex and Hertfordshire. Directly to the north of London, the region has preserved much of its unspoilt character and rural landscape.

With the rural north likened to the 'Wolds', the wooded and varied centre with stunning ridge views and the Chalk Hills of the South, Bedfordshire may be a small county but it is one of diverse and interesting landscapes.

Cycling and walking is made easy with numerous paths and cycle ways through beautiful countryside including the Downs, Chiltern Hills, Greensand Ridge and Marston Vale. With delightful towns and villages, impressive stately homes and lots of visitor attractions, Bedfordshire is a county well worth experiencing.

Norfolk boasts Britain's largest protected wetland and third largest inland waterway, and is home to some of the rarest plants and animals in the UK.

The county is not as flat as Noel Coward would have you believe, as any cyclist will tell you. Nevertheless cycling or walking is a good way to see the sites. In the west, Thetford Forest is said to be the oldest in England and is great for walking or mountain biking through the thick, cool forest. In the east, this beautiful county is crisscrossed by a network of waterways and lakes known as The Broads.

Mile upon mile of stunning beaches and unspoilt coastline can be found in Norfolk and Suffolk.

There are numerous nature reserves along the coastal path in North Norfolk. Southwold is a quintessentially English seaside town on the Suffolk Heritage Coast, and some of the finest coastal walking in the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Beauty can be found between the historic villages of Dunwich and Walberswick.

With miles of open countryside but right on London's doorstep, Hertfordshire's pretty villages, hedgerows, open fields and a number of great estates, are reminiscent of a bygone ago.

In the South East of the region, Essex is a county of gently rolling landscapes, rich with spectacular gardens, country parks, nature reserves and an extensive coastline dotted with tranquil, isolated beaches and vibrant seaside towns.
